A mesh may be needed (looks like screen material, available in hardware section). Spackle doesnt like to stick to smooth surfaces, so rough up your surface before use. Just make sure you give the spackle the full cure time before spraying. The paint/primer helps seal it pretty well. I prime it with rattle can primer/paint combo, usually brown if it is going to be dirt-based or grass covered terrain and grey or black for rocks, and blue for water. It takes impacts and drops better than the normal spackle. I prefer the kind that's "flexible," like caulk. Some of the stuff I used spackle on has actually stood up fairly well. It seems to stand up to abuse better than the spackle. For wargaming, I have moved to a brand of plaster with paper fibers in it. There is no substitute for buying a small quantity and testing on a scrap layout before committing. My personal experience with spackle, usually DAP, but sometimes knockoffs is that some varieties can be quite brittle, and others fairly heavy.
